Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast AlaskaBig Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Alaska helps children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships. BBBS believes creating and supporting successful friendships between caring adults and children who need and want them will contribute to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities. The program began in Juneau in 1979 and now serves youth in Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah, Haines, Klukwan, Skagway, Metlakatla, and Yakutat. In 2005, the agency served 563 children across the region, including 275 in Juneau. Its goal is to serve 1,000 children by 2010. National research shows children matched with a Big Brother or Sister for at least one year are half as likely to start using drugs, one-third less likely to hit someone, one-quarter less likely to start drinking, and half as likely to miss a day of school.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Become a Big Brother, Big Sister, or a couple match with children in the Community Program, the School Program, or the Amachi Program for children of incarcerated parents. BBBS also serves children in foster care, clients of Juneau Youth Services, and residents of Johnson Youth Center. Volunteer assistance is welcome at monthly activities for Bigs and Littles, fundraisers, community events, and in the office.

Current projects:
• Renewing a partnership with Johnson Youth Center to    provide mentors for incarcerated youth in Juneau and    their home communities.
• Strengthening the new BBBS program in Yakutat.
• The Big Campaign, a region-wide, multi-year recruitment    campaign with a goal of growing the volunteer base by    13% each year.

BBBS of Southeast Alaska is a 501(c)(3) corporation. It receives funds from individuals, corporations, foundations, the State of Alaska, and the federal government. Local businesses and government agencies partner with BBBS to support employees who volunteer as Bigs in local schools.

BBBS welcomes your financial support through memberships in the Little Moments Big Magic Giving Society, challenge or lead sponsorships to leverage funds for new initiatives, and support for Bowl For Kids' Sake, the agency's largest annual fundraising event.
