Description: 4-H is the non-formal youth development program of the University of Alaska. Youth from ages 6 through high school learn to use their best skills while working with volunteer leaders. There is a $6 fee for joining and members pay for project materials.

Alaska Youth Choir
Description: The Alaska Youth Choir (AYC) currently consists of approximately 30 singers ranging in age from 6 to 18. Formed in 1994 to provide advanced choral opportunities for Juneau children, the mission of AYC is to promote excellence in choral singing and encourage a lifelong learning and enjoyment of music. Choristers study and perform choral music as a group, and have opportunities to perform with community instrumental groups and vocal soloists. AYC members are expected to have a positive attitude, dedication, dependability, focus, team involvement, and a desire to achieve a high level of vocal accomplishment. The Choir performs several annual concerts, including benefits, holiday, and spring performances, and also participates in national and international choral festivals. Annual costs to AYC members include $500 tuition, as well as tour costs and expenses which are not raised through grants or fundraising efforts. Parents and choristers both are expected to participate in fundraising activities and volunteer duties. Limited tuition scholarships are available through the Akiyama Family Fund, based on financial need.

Description: The Southeast Alaska chapter of AEYC-SEA has been providing leadership in early childhood education for over twenty years in Southeast Alaska. Our membership and Board of Directors consist of parents, teachers, child care providers, school age staff, social service professionals, and anyone who recognizes the importance of the early years. The membership is actively engaged in developing and maintaining the quality of care and education for young children. In addition to advocacy activities, regional conferences, and events, the Southeast affiliate has successfully applied for and administered a number of grants, including the Child Care Food Program, Resource and Referral service, merit awards, and many projects designed to provide support and resources to families and programs caring for young children. Description: Girl Scouting is a movement that gives girls from all segments of American life a chance to develop their potential, make friends, and become a vital part of their community. Based on ethical values, Girl Scouting opens up a world of opportunity for girls working in partnership with positive adult volunteers. The Tongass Alaska Girl Scout Council welcomes all girls from throughout Southeast Alaska who wish to be Girl Scouts. Age-progressive activities enable girls from diverse backgrounds to develop leadership skills, explore interest areas, learn the value of community service, and learn positive decision making skills. Under the guidance of trained adult volunteers, girls participate in a variety of self-esteem building activities. The Tongass Alaska Girl Scout Council is chartered by Girl Scouts of the USA to offer its program in an all-girl environment. Girl Scout membership is open to all girls ages 5-17 who accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. Description: Juneau Jumpers is a performance, demonstration, and competition rope skipping team initially formed in 1987. Although Juneau Jumpers is a private, non-profit organization independent of the Juneau School District, the district recognizes it as a positive youth program, and Glacier Valley Elementary School provides gym space to the team. The long tenure, success, and respect for the team in the community are the direct result of many hours of volunteer time from coaches and parents, as well as the self-motivated youth who love the sport of jump rope.

Description: The Juneau Soccer Club (JSC) supports youth soccer in Juneau. It funds the Juneau Douglas High School boys and girls soccer teams and organizes boys and girls club teams for ages 11 through 17. There are approximately 275 players per year and an almost equal number of families who benefit from its programs. JSC has been very successful in developing players and have produced state championship teams at the high school and club level.

Description: Kids Voting Juneau is a community-based program for kids, K-12. Kids Voting provides lessons through school (public and private) on voting rights and responsibilities. On Election Day, children go to the polls with their parents to cast a Kids Voting ballot. Kids Voting ballots are tabulated and results are reported by kid reporters during election night coverage.
