Juneau Community Foundation Announces $2.9 Million in Grants to Strengthen Critical Health and Social Services Assembly Approval Pending for CBJ Funds

April 30, 2026

Today, the Foundation announces the allocation of $2,902,906 in grants to 21 local nonprofit organizations and programs working on the front lines to address health and social service challenges. These investments are the result of deep collaboration with and among service providers who understand, firsthand, where gaps exist and how to close them.

Annually, the Foundation undertakes a four-month, community driven process to identify the city’s most urgent health and social service needs for neighbors who experience homelessness or food insecurity, who need to take advantage of suicide prevention, mental health programs, or substance misuse programs, who rely on hospice, and who have been victims of violence. These programs are a vital part of the fabric of Juneau and assist thousands of people each year.

Funding for the 2026 grants includes $1,196,506 from the Juneau Community Foundation, along with $1,706,400 from the City & Borough of Juneau, pending approval by the Juneau Assembly. The CBJ Utility Waiver Program also contributes $47,500 annually to support nonprofits providing housing for vulnerable populations.

“These are the services people turn to in their hardest moments,” said Amy Skilbred, Executive Director of the Foundation. “This funding strengthens the network of critical supports in Juneau, so that more people can find shelter, food, safety, and care when they need it. And underscores the continued work needed to close gaps in access. At the same time, we know that even with these resources, not everyone who needs help can always find or reach it when most needed.”

This year’s funding continues a long-standing commitment. Since 2015, the Juneau Hope Endowment and the CBJ Social Service Grants have provided one combined grant process, which has delivered more than $22.6 million to local organizations, an investment in the well-being of Juneau’s residents and the strength of our community. All grants recipients complete a reporting process to ensure the funds have the deep impact the community desires.

As with most years, a significant portion of this year’s funding focuses on preventing and addressing homelessness. Organizations such as the Juneau Housing Collaborative (The Glory Hall), AWARE, Gastineau Human Services, St. Vincent de Paul, Family Promise of Juneau, and Shéiyi X̱aat Hít Youth Shelter provide essential housing and shelter services. Others, including Alaska Legal Services, United Human Services, the Community Navigator Program, and Alaska Housing Development Corporation, work to prevent homelessness and support individuals and families in crisis so that they do not lose stable housing.

“These organizations are deeply interconnected,” Skilbred continued.  “Each plays a role in the larger system of care that helps people stay housed, stay healthy, and move forward.”

Grant awards were determined through a rigorous process that included nonprofit-led priority setting, interviews, application reviews by an advisory committee, and final approval by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Established in 2014, the Juneau Hope Endowment is managed by the Juneau Community Foundation to provide annual social service grants. Its partnership with the CBJ Social Service Grants program is designed to maximize both impact and efficiency—ensuring that resources reach the areas of greatest need.
