We are now starting to understand the profound impacts that a high-quality early childhood education can have on a person’s life. Young children’s brains develop at an incredible rate, and by the age of six a child’s brain reaches 90% of its adult size. Positive learning experiences in problem-solving, communication, emotional regulation, movement, and language are critical to the development of a child’s brain – and these experiences go on to affect the child for the rest of their life. At the same time, early child education programs face limited capacity and resources as they work to serve the complex needs of families in our community.
The Juneau Montessori School’s mission is to help every child reach their full potential through a Montessori education. We employ the philosophy and teaching methods developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, who lived from 1870-1952. Dr. Montessori was the first female Italian physician. She took an interest in children’s psychiatry, and through careful observation, Montessori developed a comprehensive pedagogy designed to foster children’s natural enthusiasm for learning. We follow the tenets of Maria Montessori’s teaching methods: careful preparation of a learning environment that allows children to discover for themselves and grow a love of learning.
The Juneau Montessori School has been enriching the lives of Juneau families and providing exemplary Montessori education to children since 1985. We are a private, tuition-based non-profit school with a Board of Directors offering toddler to kindergarten programs serving children ages 16 months to 6 years of age. JMS is a recognized school of the Association Montessori Internationale and an Alaska State Licensed childcare facility. Our vision is to positively shape the future by cultivating the next generation of inquisitive, independent, socially responsible young citizens.
