The Northwest Coast Textile Symposium works to preserve and perpetuate the rich textile traditions of the Northwest Coast of Alaska. The symposium affirms textile art as fine art, safeguards historic techniques and pattern integrity, and ensures creative adaptability through education and the advancement of shared knowledge and resources. The foundation of the Symposium orbits around the daily weavers’ gathering, which provides expansive space for artists – many traveling thousands of miles – to share, collaborate, and be inspired by each other’s work through the unique opportunity of weaving in community.
This three-day event will bring together more than 300 weavers, practitioners, scholars, and curators for knowledge-sharing through workshops, lectures, and recorded presentations. The symposium culminates in a live-streamed Gathering of the Robes, featuring the largest known collection of Ravenstail and Chilkat ceremonial regalia ever assembled to dance together at one time.
