A Legacy in Motion…
A Promise to
the Tongass
In the Tongass National Forest, every tide, tree, and stream tells a story. The Living Wilderness Fund exists to ensure those stories are never silenced. This permanent endowment of the Sitka Conservation Society was created to ensure that the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States and one of the most ecologically significant temperate rainforests on Earth, will always have a voice. The Living Wilderness Fund was born from the vision of Sitka Conservation Society’s founders and has grown through gifts of love, land, and legacy. Every contribution – whether in honor of a loved one, through a bequest, or as a direct donation – becomes part of a lasting source of support for advocacy, stewardship, and connection to the nearly 17 million acres of forest, salmon streams, muskegs, mountains, and coastline that define Southeast Alaska.
Distributions from the Living Wilderness Fund fuels projects that keep the Tongass thriving and advocates for additional Wilderness designations on the Tongass. Our Living Wilderness Program currently involves maintaining trails and public use cabins and conducting ecological surveys and clean ups in designated Wilderness areas. At Sea Pony Farm, a remote homestead property gifted to the Living Wilderness Fund by printmaker Eric Bealer and fiber artist Pam Bealer, we are hosting immersive residency programs that bring artists, storytellers, scientists, and community leaders into the heart of the wilderness for inspiration and connection that carries outwards through their work.
In legacy giving, we walk in the footsteps of those who came before us – founders, friends, and visionaries – whose care and dedication set the course for all that the Sitka Conservation Society is today and what it will be tomorrow. By including the Living Wilderness Fund in your will or contributing assets such as stock, retirement funds, donor advised funds, or property, you help build a permanent source of support and a voice for the Tongass.
No matter the size or form, your legacy gift becomes part of a lasting commitment to protect the lands and waters that sustain Southeast Alaska. For those who wish to make an immediate impact, contributions of cash or other assets can also be directed to the Living Wilderness Fund – strengthening this permanent endowment today while your legacy plans take shape.
